Needless to say that comprehensive coverage of the whole course for both JEE Mains and Advanced is a sure shot way to kick start your preparation for JEE, and the subject, Chemistry, is no different. Physical, Organic, and Inorganic Chemistry are the three branches of chemistry that are equally important in terms of exam scoring.
However, in this particular segment we will try and distinguish organic and inorganic chemistry from a preparation and the weightage standpoint for the JEE Mains and Advanced paper. The approaches for both the branches will be different and it is the state of mind that will dictate which one to go for first, focus on a higher level and give importance to from a total examination focal point.
Speaking of organic chemistry it is more conceptual in nature as it has a lot of reactions, reagents, and mechanisms to depict and remember. From a class 11th and 12th point of view, organic chemistry is scoring, as showing the entire flow of chemical reactions helps in memorizing and tests the presentation skills of the students majorly. When we see from JEE point of view, organic is of higher volume not weightage, as from previous year experience, we can say that Physical and Inorganic combined have more questions in both JEE Mains and Advanced paper than Organic alone. But organic is higher in mental volume as it will require you to have all your major concepts related to mechanisms and reactions on your fingertips, as the questions seen in the paper will be of a higher order than seen in Class 12th board examinations.
Speaking of inorganic chemistry, it is more theoretical and a little conceptual, as we can see that one needs to memorize P block elements, D block elements, their properties, and the major decision-maker, exceptions. Inorganic chemistry from a distant level, is very contradictory, as each element shows exceptions, and there is no easier way than to remember all of these. These types of questions can cause a vast difference in the overall JEE Mains and Advanced cut off, and your rank too, if the exception or the right fact does not click at the time of attempting the paper.
To conclude, if you are more of a conceptual person and seek flows and logic, then organic chemistry is your saviour, you will be able to understand, relate and crack, and it will also mean that your level of comprehension of physical chemistry will also be improved. So you can keep a major chunk of your focus on organic and physical chemistry, after winning that battle, see the best you can make out of inorganic chemistry. However, if you like more of theory, then keep a balance of inorganic and physical chemistry as those 2 combined weigh more than organic chemistry. Emphasize majorly on the theoretical part and factual concepts of organic chemistry, try to master them in the 1st go. Once you can crack this, see how much can you make of the conceptual part of organic Chemistry? Both are important, but save the strengths first, then work on the weaknesses.
